The simplest pre-tax benefit you're probably not using

A Premium Only Plan is a written Section 125 cafeteria plan document that lets employees redirect premium contributions through payroll before taxes are calculated.

1
Employee elects coverage

They choose their health, dental, or vision plan as normal — nothing changes for them or your carrier.

2
Payroll deducts pre-tax

Premiums are deducted before federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%) are applied.

3
Both sides save

Employees take home more pay. You pay less FICA on every participating employee, every payroll period.

Built for employers who offer group benefits

If you're already paying group health insurance premiums, a POP document is the lowest-effort tax savings available to you.

Small businesses (2–50 employees)

Often overlooked, but the per-employee savings are identical regardless of company size. Setup pays for itself quickly.

HR teams simplifying compliance

Our plan documents meet IRS requirements out of the box. Annual amendments and nondiscrimination testing guidance included.

Companies switching payroll

Organizations without a plan doc

Many employers deduct premiums pre-tax informally — without a written plan, that's a compliance risk. We fix it.

Common questions

No. A Premium Only Plan is a plan document layer that sits on top of your existing insurance. Your carrier, plan design, and premiums all stay exactly the same.
No — participation is voluntary. Each employee elects whether to have premiums deducted pre-tax. Most choose to participate since it increases their take-home pay at no cost to them.
A POP can cover employee-paid contributions toward employer-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and certain supplemental insurance. It does not cover FSA or HSA contributions — those require a full cafeteria plan.
Yes. Section 125 plans must pass IRS nondiscrimination tests to ensure they don't disproportionately benefit highly-compensated or key employees. Our documents include guidance, and we offer optional annual testing support.
Your original plan document remains in effect from year to year, but IRS guidance recommends an annual amendment to reflect any changes to your plan year, premiums, or eligible benefits. Annual amendments are available for a separate fee.
Without a written Section 125 plan document, pre-tax premium deductions are technically not IRS-compliant, even if you've been doing them informally for years. This can result in employees and the employer owing back taxes and penalties on audit.
